that fine line between horror and exaltation….

so. ever been looking in the mirror …doesn’t matter the time of day…and you see a hair? A long hair? You know..on your face? There’s that complete moment of incredulousness…that, no way…how could you have not seen this 1″ long hair? Did it grow overnight? Did it miraculously happen in the last half hour? This has happened to me.

This morning I couldn’t sleep, and finally gave in at about 4:30 a.m. In my bleary eyed state I threw on some clothes and went to head to the studio when i caught myself in the mirror and paused for uno momento. Lo and behold, there was the dreaded long face hair. Seriously? How does this happen?

Life here has been pretty out of control lately.  Not in the hectic ‘oh my GOD…we are freaking out!’ out of control…but in an extremely controlled, out of control way.  Don’t take me the wrong way…, business is booming and fabulous and we’re busting at the seams and that being said..

Friday was the end of the month and ran the numbers for September. It’s no secret to us that we’ve been busy as all get out, but seeing our numbers on paper for our best month EVER was mind blowing..and has kind of thrown me into a numbing realm of ‘holy shit’ and ‘what the hell?’..and ‘is this cool?’  It’s propelling me to think about things like ‘holy crap, i employ people..and what if it all goes to shit?’, and ‘what if no one wants to buy another stupid thing and i have no job..what am i going to do?’  and then there’s the ever present ‘I swear i will sell a kidney before i ever go back to waiting tables..”

Several cups of coffee in the studio later I wandered in to scramble the eggs and pour the juice, make sure lunches made it as far as backpacks, emptied the dishwasher (i freakin’ detest emptying the dishwasher…), waited on the corner for the bus, fed the dog, cleaned the kitchen again, and back into the studio for more coffee.

I think it’s like the fine line between love and hate..the horror and the exaltation. The hair, i believe, belonged to the dog..and thankfully was not sprouting from my eyebrow. Things can change in a SECOND…and not always for the worse. Nope…not always. We’ll see what tomorrow’s wild hair may bring.

a much needed break from work..to get back to real life

10 glorious days at the beach with my boys (falling into this particular category are my husband, sons, and dog..) and some friends. If i could have orchestrated the weather i couldn’t have done it justice.

i sincerely heart the ocean. just for the record..these were taken in the gulf, BP be damned. Thankfully and miraculously, so much of the gulf beaches were spared…although it has affected many of our beach accounts.  It’s beautiful people..get your asses down there.

hang in there beach…only 8 weeks till we are reunited again!

cheers, erin

why i haven’t written in over a month..

this is erin’s bloog. what the hell’s a bloog??

if it was a “blog” it would create false expectations in people . you might bug me to write everyday. some days i don’t even have time to brush my teeth, much less write. i’d love to be able to..alas. hence the made up word ‘bloog’. it means i can write whenever i damn want. THIS IS AN NC-17 BLOOG. i swear like a sailor with his foot on fire. if this offends you please hit the red x on the top right of your screen now. if anything you read here offends you, PLEASE do not write me and tell me about it. again. hit the red x on the top right of your screen, and don’t return to the bloog. no one is MAKING you read it. problem solved.

just sayin’.

hellllloooo Hollywood!

just wanted to let you all know that we here at erin smith art fully support the current phenomenon of all things Vampire. why not?

"I never drink.....wine." Dracula (1979)

sharing this a.m. that a legal release has been signed by myself, for the inclusion of one of our large canvases as a set dressing in a new vampire flick currently being filmed! The film has some BIG names…hmmm, will it be in a background? will it be cut out of a scene and end up on the floor? will it get sprayed with blood??!

Whomever can guess correctly which canvas they’ve chosen i’ll throw ya something free. yea!! free stuff!!

dog days of summer in HOTlanta

We are CRANKING here in the studio in Atlanta! All of our Dallas orders – gone!, all of the Atlanta and Chicago orders for cards – gone!, half way thru Atlanta canvas orders and will have everything!! (hang tight Chicago) out before leaving for NYGift next week. In addition to the furious pace we’re working, we’ve had a little warm weather…

Updated: 3:59 am EDT on August 5, 2010

Heat advisory in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening…Heat index readings 105 to 109

and THIS is our studio AIR CONDITIONER.  um…yes…IT IS A HUGE BLOCK OF ICE!

Needless to say, the girls are keeping a much better attitude than I am despite the fact it’s hotter in here than the heat index OUTSIDE. I’ve been bitching for 2 days!

Not to worry…our trusty office manager Fred is at Home Depot RIGHT NOW and if he doesn’t come home with a new air conditioner and a sledge hammer…he’s fired. (don’t worry, i fire him like 3 times a day)

We get a lot of love letters here at erin smith art. Thank you for taking the time to contact us and let us know that we’ve made you laugh or smile or wet your pants or whatever. It makes all of our hard (and currently really freakin’ HOT…but i digress) work meaningful.

I’d like to give a shout out today to Barbara whom recently saw our cards at Linn’s Restaurant in Cambria California. www.linnsfruitbin.com. She says they’re the funniest cards she’s ever seen (WOW!). She “bought a bunch ~ and when I looked online, I saw so many more that I had to have!”  She’d like us to keep up the creative work, and she agrees, as we do, that the world need to laugh more.

Just keep spreading the love Barbara and eventually we’ll take over the world.

it feels like a year..two weeks’ll do that to ya

man. so much has happened since my last post before my talk at the Atlanta Mart. The talks went well..thanks to those of you that joined me. I ended up reading from a Danielle Steele novel at Friday’s talk…what do people want? D.S. has 850 million copies sold so she can’t be too far off the mark. Thanks for putting up with me people!  Atlanta was a great show as always and I love seeing all of you – thank you SO much for all of your support, the ATL drama being a notch higher than normal. :)

I was only home for a day between ATL and the Beckman’s Chicago show. I hadn’t been back for the Chicago show for for about 2 1/2 years (one of the very first ones i ever did!) and I have to send a big shout out to the midwest for making this a real surprise. We picked up a boatload of new accounts and revisted some long lost friends..and the Beckman’s crew is fantastical. We also picked up another ‘best of’ trophy, and the girls kicked in some alcohol for the win. WIN!

i grew up in the Chicago environs, so it’s always a busy visit for me: hung out with my high school girls tennis team one night at the Wit roof top bar (had to jump thru hoops of fire and then couldn’t get any service to save our lives – bailed and hit some dive that had amazing menus with young Linda Ronstadt on the cover..really), saw my best friends, hung with my friend and wonderful agent Lisa and did sushi, did Legoland and learned to build the Sears tower with my youngest, bbq at the inlaws, whew. Drove home with all my boys instead of a flight back, as we stopped and did some cave hiking in Kentucky on the return. This windmill farm has grown exponentially in the last year and keeps on going..they really take me breath away for some reason.

LEGO watertower place...

we’re in major ‘crank’ mode now. Shipped 25 orders yesterday..17 on Monday. going full speed ahead…as I leave for NYGift next week.

Working on images for 2012′s calendar (um, yeah those are due already!), and discussing new product development and checking samples. will keep you posted on what’s going to be new for the winter gift shows. I know…i know…let’s just get thru August and then we can discuss it!

off for more coffee…and invoices…and oh yeah..the kids need breakfast before school. Oh didn’t i mention that? yes, SCHOOL started Monday…THE 2ND OF AUGUST. huh.

Come one come all! THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN..AmericasMart

Those who know me personally know that I am RARELY at a loss for words, and so, should not be surprised that I will be speaking not once, but twice this week. Please join me in the Just Got 2 Have It! showroom in Atlanta Thursday or Friday from 3-4:30.

What will I be talking about? hmmm. I’m going to wing it, so I’m sure Friday will be different from Thursday because other than what I plan on drinking, I’m keeping it pretty loose.

You’ll be riveted by the story behind the erin smith art brand…(smirk!), how we’ve become so successful so quickly (luck), our business philosophy (huh?), why liscensors and publishers are clamoring for it and my theory on why people worldwide can’t seem to live without it! (um, bringin’ a little laughter to the masses people!!)

I’ll be sharing some readings from my bloog (if you’re not familiar with my bloog, well, I don’t know what to say to you..!), and how everyday life inspires art. Remember people, say it with me..’I couldn’t make this shit up..I just write it down’.

And we’ll have some drawings for free personalized canvases and fill you in on the “win a trunk show” at your store with Erin this holiday. WHEEEE!  See you there.

(for those not in Atlanta, don’t fret. We’ll be in Chicago at the end of the month, and if you miss THAT, there’s always New York next month!)
